Overview of Procedure

BEFORE YOUR SESSION

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Always drink plenty of water before, during and after your sauna session! Feel free to bring in a water bottle to drink during your session.  A bath towel and face cloth are provided for your use.

Remove all make-up to allow your skin to receive the full benefits of the infrared and red light waves.

WHAT TO WEAR

Most people prefer to expose as much skin as possible, so a swimsuit or underclothing. However, this is a public facility, nudity is not permitted. The more rays that your body is exposed to the better! (Your room is completely private.). Sunglasses are beneficial to use, if the red light is too bright for your comfort. We recommend bringing clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable to put back on after your session.

DURING YOUR SESSION

Our staff will show you into the room for your first session, step out for you to undress and enjoy your session.  After your first session, the room will be ready for your use.  There is a timer provided for your use.

You have control over which device and panel you use.  There are two smaller panels, one full body panels, and one hand-held device.  The panels can be hung over head, front facing or on the side.  Choose your configuration and then turn the panels on and relax. Use the goggles provided, if using any device closer than 6- 10 inches from face.

It is safe to leave your eyes open although it may take a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to leaving them fully open. Use sunglasses if needed.   The devices turn on with a power button.  The devices can be used up to 10 minutes per each area of the body.  Rotate, turn over, sit a different way to expose your troubled areas to the light, its completely customizable and individualized experience. Turn off all devices and panels after your session is over.

AFTER YOUR SESSION

When you finish your Red Light Therapy session it is important to relax and have a cool down briefly. Let your body do the work to return itself to its regular status.

Place your used towels in the Towel hamper and you’re all set!

Wait at least 20-30 minutes before you shower.

Step By Step Procedure

Remove any metal items that can become hot before switching on the device.  White or light-colored clothing, bathing suit or undergarments must be worn at all times.  Black clothing absorbs the light and makes it less effective.  The more exposed the body part to the light, the more effective the treatment.

We recommend short treatment times at the beginning.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Continental Massage is excited to announce our newest service offering, Red Light Therapy. Red light therapy has been studied and tested across hundreds of peer-reviewed clinical trials, with overwhelmingly positive results for skin health, collagen production, physical performance & muscle recovery, sleep, joint pain, inflammation, and a lot more. And that’s without drugs, chemicals, UV rays, invasive procedures, or other common side effects.

NFL stars, NBA teams, Olympians, world-class trainers, natural health leaders, and leading clinics & gyms are using red light therapy every day for these natural health benefits.

Our high-quality red light therapy devices use medical-grade LEDs to deliver concentrated wavelengths of natural light to your skin and cells, without dangerous UV rays or excess heat. All you have to do is sit or stand near a device for 5-15 minutes per specified body part or surface area to charge your cells. Use our handheld device to focus red light on a concentrated area, such as the face, or a knee.  Use large hanging panels to cover more surface area of your body: the back, upper legs, or upper body. The more area you can cover, the more your cells absorb natural light, and the more full-body benefits you can expect to see with consistent use.

Red and near infrared wavelengths of natural light stimulate the mitochondria in your cells, the powerhouses responsible for taking light, oxygen, and the food we eat—and turning it into usable energy for our bodies through the process of cellular respiration.

Red Light therapy is available in our converted infrared sauna with Himalayan salt therapy. Each session is up to 45 minutes. One overhead panel, one side panel and one handheld device are provided during each session to use simultaneously or any in combination.

The Endocannabinoid System and You

endosystem

Did You Know?

There is an intricate group of receptors within the body called the endocannabinoid system(ECS). This complex network impacts many areas of health and is most abundant in the brain and immune system. Studies have shown the ECS to be responsible for important functions such as sleep, relaxation, inflammatory responses, and cognitive ability. The ECS is normally fueled by the healthy production of endocannabinoids. The challenge arises when endocannabinoid production becomes impaired or slowed. The good news is that nature has gifted us with a solution. Phytocannabinoids innately occur in the hemp plant and can serve as a replacement for the endocannabinoids your body may be lacking.

The News Is Out

Since ancient times, the hemp plant has been revered for an abundance of health benefits. Hemp is naturally rich in phytocannabinoids. This amazing botanical includes hundreds of other biologically active compounds, each one with its own potential for health benefits. However, when the plant is consumed in its full and natural arrangement, the potential for health impact explodes. This phenomenon is known as the “entourage effect” and it only occurs in full

Positive Body Image Through Touch

Combating Negative Imagesladycouch
How do you see yourself? Are you content with the person looking back at you from the mirror or do you frown in frustration? Researchers say more than 80 percent of U.S. women are unhappy with their appearance. Whether it’s lamenting about having a pear-shaped figure instead of an hourglass or exhibiting more serious,
self-hating body dysmorphic disorders, body image is under siege in our celebrity-fixated society. While Madison Avenue continues
to airbrush photos of svelte, 120-pound supermodels for magazine covers, others are trying to teach young girls to love their bodies, beautiful imperfections and all. One way to combat the Hollywood hype and to create an appreciation for the bodies we have—and teach our children the same—is through hands-on massage and bodywork.

Every Shape, Every Size
Whether a client weighs 30 pounds or 300 pounds, massage and bodywork therapists are trained to appreciate all bodies, without judgment, and to deliver the best care possible. During your session, your therapist’s goal will be to create an environment that feels safe and nurturing for you, all while delivering much needed therapeutic touch.

Reconnect with Massage
Being unhappy with our bodies has serious, and sometimes lifelong,
ramifications. Feelings of unworthiness and self-loathing can set up a lifetime of self-deprecating behaviors. What regularly scheduled massage allows us to do is “get back” into our bodies and reconnect with ourselves. Massage can help us release physical and mental patterns of tension, enhancing our ability to experience our
bodies (regardless of their shape and size) in a more positive way. Just as it facilitates our ability to relax, massage also encourages
an awareness of the body, often
allowing us to more clearly see and identify destructive behaviors, including overeating or purging.
Massage also creates a sense of nurturing that is especially powerful when it comes to poor body image. Accepting the nonjudgmental touch of a trained therapist goes a long way toward rebuilding
an appreciation and respect for your own body. If we find acceptance for who we are and how we look, we are giving ourselves permission to live comfortably in the skin we have.

Through the Scars

thru scars
A negative body image is not necessarily about those few extra pounds on the hips.
It might instead be tied to the scars of past
injuries and surgeries. Massage can help here, too. For burn victims, research
has shown massage can help in the healing process, while for postsurgery
breast cancer patients, massage and bodywork
can reintegrate a battered body and spirit. In addition to softening scar tissue and speeding postsurgery recovery, massage and bodywork for these clients are about respect, reverence, and learning to look at, and beyond, the scars.
The Value of Touch
Touch is a powerful ally in the quest for physical and mental health. It not only can help you be more in tune with your body, but it can help create
a sense of wellness and “wholeness” that is often
lost in our segmented, overscheduled lives. When we regain that connection, it’s much easier to remember that our bodies are something to be cherished, nurtured, and loved, not belittled, betrayed, and forgotten.
Valuable for every age and every body type, massage and bodywork have innumerable benefits. Here are a few:
• Alleviates low-back pain and improves range of motion.
• Decreases medication dependence.
• Eases anxiety and depression.
• Enhances immunity by stimulating lymph flow.
• Exercises and stretches weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
• Increases joint flexibility.
• Improves circulation by pumping oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.
• Releases endorphins—the body’s natural painkiller.

Aromatherapy and Massage

What is Aromatherapy Massage?
Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy but with highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, added to the massage oil or lotion.  Aromatherapy massage is an alternative therapy. It combines with natural therapeutic properties of essential oils. Most of the time aromatherapy massage is applied as a blend of essential oils. Essential oil blends are absorbed through the skin. The subtle aroma of the essential oil blend fills the air around you during the massage.  Aromatherapy massage has powerful physical, emotional as well as mental affect and described as a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. Aromatherapy massage affects a wide range of health conditions, like nervous, lymphatic, immune system, muscular system, circulatory and more.  After the massage, the massage therapist may suggest a blend that you can use at home in between massage treatments.

What are essential oils?  Massage therapy with aroma oils has many healing benefits. These types of aroma oils or essential oils collected from various kinds of fruits, flowers, seeds and leaves of essential plants. There are more than 400 Essential Oils available, but only 40 common essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy. Many Aromatherapists believe aromatherapy can boost one’s well-being; relieve stress, reduce headaches and tension and help improve one’s body and mind. In aromatherapy, different types of essential oils are mixed with a carrier like sweet almond, grapeseed, and apricot kernel oil.

How does it work?
The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system. The limbic system controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system.

Some Examples and Uses:  Each essential oil has different healing properties. For example, some calm while others energize. Here are some widely used essential oils and their purported properties:

calming – chamomile, lavender, geranium
uplifting – ylang-ylang, clary sage, rose, neroli
energizing – rosemary
cleansing – rosemary
decongesting – eucalyptus, pine, tea tree
Why do people get aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally-related conditions.

Stress and stress-related conditions such as insomnia
Headache
Digestive disorders
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Back pain
Here are a few examples of the research that is being done on aromatherapy massage:

Self-massage significantly improved symptoms and wellbeing in people with lymphedema. It also slightly, but not significantly reduced limb volume. However, carefully chosen aromatherapy oils did not appear to be more effective than massage without aromatherapy oils.
Sixteen first-time mothers received a 30-minute aromatherapy massage two days after delivery, while 20 mothers received standard post-partum care. The aromatherapy massage group had significantly decreased ratings of post-partum blues and anxiety and had increased vigor and attachment to their babies.

Research suggests that patients with cancer, particularly in the palliative care setting, are increasingly using aromatherapy and massage.
What can I expect during an aromatherapy massage?
After the consultation, one or more essential oils are selected based on what you need and are mixed in with the massage oil or lotion.

What is Aromatherapy

Definition
Aromatherapy is a fascinating alternative medicine that involves the use of volatile plant materials, also known as essential oils, that can be aromatically inhaled by patients of a wide variety of health conditions. It is often used to improve mood, change cognitive states, and can also be utilized as a supplemental medicine.
An important element of aromatherapy is synergy, which is the combination of numerous essential oils that can create a more powerful effect than the oils would have on their own. Blending essential oils is such an important area of study for alternative healers since the range of possibilities is almost endless. However, it is important to always do your consultation with trained aromatherapists, as some essential oils can trigger allergies, and can actually be toxic if mixed improperly. Furthermore, most aromatherapy treatments with essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil of some kind, to make the effects slightly less potent. If you use too strong of a concentration of essential oils in aromatherapy, it can result in a wide range of negative side effects.

Benefits of aromatherapy
Some of the health benefits of aromatherapy include its ability to reduce anxiety, ease depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion, and increase circulation.
Stress Relief: Perhaps the most widespread and popular use of aromatherapy is for stress relief. The aromatic compounds from many different essential oils are known as relaxants and can help to soothe your mind and eliminate anxiety. This is what most people who perform aromatherapy at home use it for since the mixtures are very simple and the research on this aspect of aromatherapy is very well-known and widely studied. Some of the best essential oils for stress relief are lemon oil, lavender, bergamot, peppermint, vetiver, and ylang-ylang essential oils. Certain studies have also shown that lemon oil can improve mood and reduce outbursts of anger.
Antidepressant Capacity: Second to stress relief, aromatherapy is very commonly used to eliminate feelings of depression, and due to the very complicated side effects of pharmaceutical antidepressants, this is a very important function of aromatherapy. While this is useful as a complementary treatment, psychological help or counseling should be sought out if depression continues or worsens. In terms of the best essential oils to use for reducing depression, most specialists suggest peppermint, chamomile, lavender, and jasmine.
Memory: One of the most frightening and widespread diseases affecting older people is memory loss and the inability to form short term memories. While Alzheimer’s is still considered an incurable disease, there are certain ways to reduce or slow down the progression of the condition. Aromatherapy has often been turned to as an alternative or supplemental treatment for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have also shown the efficacy of aromatherapy in younger patients in terms of boosting their memory capacity for a certain amount of time after the treatment. This refreshing burst for the brain can be useful in all walks of life, no matter what age you are! Sage oil is the most commonly recommended oil for this sort of memory-enhancing effect.
Boost Energy Levels: We can all use more energy to get through the hectic daily tasks of modern life. However, stimulants like coffee, cigarettes, energy pills, or even illegal substances can have very damaging effects on the body. While diet and exercise can also help, many people turn to aromatherapy to put a bit more pep in their step. Many essential oils are known to increase circulation, raise energy levels, and generally stimulate the body and mind, without the dangerous side effects of other stimulating substances. The best essential oils for giving yourself an energy boost include black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, angelica, jasmine, tea tree, rosemary, and sage.
Healing and Recovery: As stimulants, many essential oils can help increase the rate of healing throughout the body. This can be due to increased oxygen and blood flow to wounds as well as more internal healing processes like those following surgeries or illness. The anti-microbial properties of certain essential oils also keep the body protected during these delicate healing stages of the body. Some of the most popular essential oils for speeding up the healing process of the body include lavender, calendula, rosehip, Everlasting, and buckthorn essential oils. A number of those same oils do more than heal wounds; they can also reduce the severity and discomfort of skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.
Headaches: Everyone gets headaches from time to time, and the bad ones can stop us dead in our tracks. Rather than relying on pharmaceuticals or dishing out a lot of money for an expensive massage, aromatherapy can be a wonderful solution that can not only eliminate your current headache, but possibly reduce the stress, anxiety, or medical origin of your headaches to prevent them in the future. Some of the best essential oils that have been connected to reducing headaches and migraines are peppermint, eucalyptus, sandalwood, and rosemary essential oils. You can also mix these oils in a carrier oil and spread that oil onto your skin, scalp, neck, and temples. Some of the best carrier oils for headaches include almond, avocado, coconut, apricot kernel, and sesame oils.
Sleep Aid: Not getting enough sleep can exacerbate or cause a huge range of medical conditions and can leave us feeling unproductive and devoid of energy. Luckily, aromatherapy comes through again and can provide us with a more balanced sleep schedule and can even realign our Circadian rhythms so our body naturally gets tired at an appropriate time, sleeps restfully through the night, and is energized in the morning to face the day. Some of the best essential oils for managing your sleeping habits and having a healthy, sedative effect on the body include lavender, chamomile, jasmine, benzoin, neroli, rose, sandalwood, sweet marjoram, and ylang-ylang essential oils.
Immune System: It is far better to prevent than treat, as most medical professionals say, and aromatherapy can give you a serious boost to your immune system if used properly. The anti-microbial effects, as well as the anti-fungal and antibacterial effects, can protect you from any number of illnesses and infections that could damage your system. This area of aromatherapy is very popular and widely studied. Some of the most effective essential oils that boost your immune system include oregano, frankincense, lemon, peppermint, cinnamon, and eucalyptus essential oils.
Pain Relief: Analgesics can have a lot of different effects on the body as a side effect, even if they do relieve the pain. However, if aromatherapy can relieve dozens of different types of pain, then why not take advantage of it? Pain relief is one of the most useful applications of aromatherapy. The top essential oils, both for professional and personal use, include lavender, chamomile, clary sage, juniper, eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint essential oils.
Digestion: Although this isn’t the most widely researched area of aromatherapy, digestive issues can certainly be treated by aromatherapy. It can ease constipation, indigestion, bloating, and can speed up the metabolism so food is digested quicker. Citrus essential oils are normally the best for treating digestive conditions, including lemon and orange, but there have also been some studies that have cited ginger, dill, fennel, chamomile, clary sage, and lavender as being effective as well.
Whatever your condition, and whatever essential oils you choose to use, always consult your doctor before embarking on a new treatment plan. Also, be sure to only acquire essential oils from approved sources and don’t attempt to mix and use oils unless you have been trained as a professional aromatherapist.
Essential Oils Provide Healing and Balance
Aromatic essential oils extracted from herbs, flowers, resin, wood and roots have long been a source of healing, aiding in relaxation, circulation and wound healing. However, the use of these medicinal oils declined as the modern pharmaceutical industry developed. In 1928, French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse revived the use of essential oils and developed the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from botanicals to balance and harmonize the health of body, mind, and spirit. Gattefosse coined the practice aromatherapy.

Because of aromatherapy’s effect on emotional health, many practitioners incorporate this noninvasive treatment into their practices. Dispensers or diffusers filled with aromatic essences may be used to scent the room, and specific essential oils are used on the client’s skin during massage. Because each oil has unique characteristics and benefits, the choice of oil or oils can be customized to the client’s needs and emotional state. Whether inhaled or applied topically, aromatherapy requires an understanding of how each essential oil interacts with the body, as well as the mind. Many pure essential oils need to be diluted, as they can cause irritation when applied directly to the skin, and training is necessary to guarantee safe and correct usage.

The emotions listed below can be gently eased by one or a combination of the following essential oils:

Anxiety: bergamot, cedarwood, clary sage, frankincense, lavender, patchouli, Roman chamomile, rose, sandalwood.

Fatigue, Burnout: basil, ginger, grapefruit, jasmine, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood.

Stress: bergamot, frankincense, geranium, lavender, mandarin, neroli, patchouli, Roman chamomile, ylang-ylang.

Anger: jasmine, neroli, orange, patchouli, petitgrain, Roman chamomile, rose, vetiver, ylang-ylang.
Happy Inhaling!

5 Benefits of Infrared Sauna

Looking for a great way to assist with detoxification, relaxation, pain relief, improve blood pressure or improve cell health? Try a session in our Infrared Sauna. Our sauna uses far infrared energy heat, rather than steam as used in traditional saunas. Infrared heat increases blood circulation throughout your skin which is mandatory for glowing, beautiful skin. Studies have shown improvements in skin tone, complexion, and elasticity. Infrared heats the body directly instead of heating the air consequently, you do not experience an unbearable hard to breathe heat. Infrared levels target improved immune function, increasing circulation and to detoxify your body. Can be a stand-alone session or combine with any massage.

5 Top Benefits of Infrared Sauna Use

DETOXIFICATION
Sweating is one of the body’s ways of removing toxins. An infrared sauna allows you to sweat out up to 7 times more toxins than traditional saunas. As an added benefit, it gives the kidneys and liver a break from the detoxification process. Heavy metals that often accumulate in toxic levels such as lead, cadmium, copper, manganese and nickel have been shown to detox with sweat. Toxic chemicals from our environment, such as pesticides and phthalates, can also be excreted through the body via sweat. An important factor, however, is how you are sweating. According to Nutritional Balancing Practitioner Wendy Myers says:
“Sweating during exercise is not effective for detoxification because exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous system (stress, fight or flight) activity inhibits toxin elimination. You must be in a parasympathetic state (calm, rest or sleep) to detox. You can either workout OR detox, not usually both at the same time.”
RELAXATION
Quiet time, space, privacy; this is a sauna benefit much-needed in our hectic, rapid-fire society.
Deep tissue relaxation.
As the body warms throughout, the heat relaxes your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and oxygen and nutrients are delivered to tissues that are not that well supplied at other times.
The stimulation of endorphin production (our own natural feel-good chemicals).
Studies have shown that infrared heat therapy helps the body maintain healthy levels of cortisol allowing you to relieve day-to-day stress and RELAX.

PHYSICAL PERFORMACE
Enhanced physical conditioning and athletic performance. Causes an increased heart rate and stroke volume (amount of blood pumped with each heartbeat) in order to bring blood to the surface of the skin for sweat production and cooling. Primes you for a great workout by warming up the muscles, tendons, and ligaments and cranking up the circulatory system before you get started. Shortened recovery time from workouts. Shorter recovery time from muscle aches, strains and bruises. Quicker clearance of lactic acid from post workout muscle soreness.

PAIN RELIEF
Infrared heat deeply penetrates joints and muscles and increases circulation and oxygen flow. Some of the conditions that respond to FIR are sports injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain syndromes.

SKIN PURIFICATION
Infrared heat increases blood circulation throughout your skin which is mandatory for glowing, beautiful skin. Using a sauna provides comprehensive and intensive cleansing for the skin. It also encourages circulation throughout the body and blood flow to the skin so the skin can get the nutrients it needs more easily. Saunas have been found to be superior to body wraps in treating cellulite, enhancing collagen development, hydrating the skin, increasing the metabolism and emulsifying fat in the sebaceous glands.
